Introduction: More than ever, traditional agricultural practices need a shift towards more resilient, sustainable, modern and adaptable practices that benefit the health of the planet and people. Today's consumers are constantly on the lookout for novel, highly nutritious foods that have a positive impact on their overall health and well-being. Nettle (Urtica dioica L.) is gaining recognition not only as a popular medicinal plant, but also as a desirable green leafy vegetable rich in phytonutrients. As it is difficult and even expensive to control the quality standards of wild-collected plants, the implementation of sustainable cultivation methods, especially hydroponics, with effective greenhouse management could be a possible solution to obtain a standardized product with high nutritional value. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of four nutrient solutions differing in the content of macro- and micronutrients (especially nitrogen, potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron) and two consecutive cuts on the number of leaves, yield, nitrate and mineral content and the content of specialized metabolites of stinging nettle from a floating hydroponic system. Methods: Nettle plants were cultivated in a hydroponic system using the floating hydroponics technique. The two-factorial experiment was performed with nutrient solution and consecutive cuts as factors. Results: The highest yield (2.49 kg/m2) was achieved after the 1st cut with plants cultivated in the nutrient solution with higher nutrient concentration. All tested nutrient solutions resulted in high levels of minerals and bioactive compounds in the plant material (ascorbic acid content of 102.30 mg/100 g fw and total phenolics content of 465.92 mg GAE/100 g fw), confirming floating hydroponics as a sustainable approach for cultivating nettle with enhanced nutritional value and antioxidant potential. Conclusion: It is important to highlight that the nutrient solution with the lowest nutrient composition yielded the highest concentrations of calcium (5.54%) and iron (180.67 mg/kg dw). Furthermore, it exhibited elevated levels of specific phenolic compounds, including caffeoylmaleic acid, ellagic acid, ferulic acid, naringin, and rutin trihydrate. Notably, this solution demonstrated the lowest nitrate content (4225.33 mg/kg fw) in the plant material. Therefore, it can be recommended as a preferable formulation for hydroponic nettle cultivation.

Background: Dietary nitrate and nitrite may affect the gut microbiota and its metabolites, such as trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) and kynurenine (KYN). However, this association and the exact mechanism are still unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the association between dietary consumption of nitrite and nitrate on TMAO and KYN levels in adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study was employed on a subsample baseline phase of the Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) Employee's Cohort Study (TEC). A total of 250 adults aged 18 years or older were included in the current analysis. Data on the dietary intakes were collected using a validated dish-based food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and dietary intakes of nitrite and nitrate were estimated using the FFQ with 144 items. Serum profiles and TMAO and KYN were measured using a standard protocol. Results: The findings of this study demonstrate a significant association between the intake of animal sources of nitrate and nitrite and the likelihood of having elevated levels of TMAO and KYN. Specifically, after adjustment, individuals with the highest intake adherence to nitrates from animal sources exhibited increased odds of having the highest level of TMAO (≥51.02 pg/ml) (OR = 1.51, 95% CI = 0.59-3.88, P = 0.03) and KYN (≥417.41 pg/ml) (OR = 1.75, 95% CI = 0.73-4.17, P = 0.02). Additionally, subjects with the highest animal intake from nitrite sources have 1.73 and 1.45 times higher odds of having the highest levels of TMAO and KYN. These results emphasize the potential implications of animal-derived nitrate and nitrite consumption on the levels of TMAO and KYN. Conclusion: The present evidence indicates that a high level of nitrate and nitrite intake from animal sources can increase the odds of high levels of TMAO and KYN. Further studies suggest that we should better evaluate and understand this association.

Cured meat products constitute one of the meat categories commonly consumed in Ireland and has been part of the Irish cuisine and diet for many years. Ham, gammon, and bacon are some of the products that involve curing as part of the traditional processing methods. Common among these products are high levels of salt and the addition of nitrites. These products undergo processing treatments to create variety, preserve shelf-life, and develop their unique quality and safety characteristics. However, consumers are becoming more conscious of the level of processing involved in these products, and the effects of some components and ingredients might be perceived as unhealthy. Meat product developers have been exploring ways to reduce the amount of ingredients such as salt, saturated fat, and chemical preservatives (e.g., nitrites), which are linked to health concerns. This is a challenging task as these ingredients play an important techno-functional role in the products' quality, safety, and identity. While innovative processing techniques are being introduced and progress has been made in reformulation and packaging technologies, much is still unknown, especially regarding the applicability of many of the proposed interventions to a wide range of meat products and their sustainability at the industrial scale.

The use of nitrogen as a fertilizer can be highly risky when used excessively, and it is therefore necessary to find novel techniques to reduce its use. Aquaponics reduces the use of synthetic fertilizers and water, and the leaching of nitrate into the environment. One way to avoid problems due to a reduction in nitrogen availability could be the use of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). This study examines the effect of PGPR on kohlrabi plants grown with a traditional nutrient solution (100S), in combination with "fish water" (50F/50D), or with a supplement of synthetic fertilizers (50F/50D + S). Two formulations were used: T1 (Azospirillum brasilense and Pantoea dispersa) and T2 (Azotobacter salinestris). Irrigation with 50F/50D caused a reduction in several of the measured parameters. The combined application of 50F/50D with T1 attenuated the negative effects. T2 did not present significant effects on the parameters measured. The results obtained with 50F/50D + S hardly showed differences with the 100S. Thus, by irrigating with 50F/50D + S, we were able to maintain the yields while reducing fertilizer use and water. The combined use of T1 and 50F/50D was also positive; however, it would be necessary to continue adjusting the amount of nitrate supplied to maintain production.

Methemoglobinemia is a potentially life-threatening condition caused by the formation of methemoglobin, a form of hemoglobin that cannot bind oxygen. While there are some rare congenital causes of methemoglobinemia, most cases are acquired from the effects of specific drugs or environmental exposures. In this retrospective study, we analyzed a large data set of whole blood samples analyzed for methemoglobin at an academic medical center in Midwestern United States that provides both pediatric and adult services. For a 14 year timeframe (May 2009- June 2023), we performed detailed chart analysis of all patients with a methemoglobin concentration of 3.1 % or higher. For an earlier 13 year timeframe (January 1996-April 2009), we performed chart review for all patients with a methemoglobin concentration of 10.0 % or higher. For the 2009-2023 data, dapsone was the most frequent cause of methemoglobinemia (methemoglobin 3.1 % or higher) in both pediatric (73.3 %, 115 clinical encounters, 105 unique patients) and adult (65.3 %, 195 clinical encounters, 190 unique patients) populations. Inhaled nitric oxide as medical therapy was the next most frequent cause in both pediatric (18.1 %) and adult (13.2 %) populations. Causes associated with two or more unique episodes with methemoglobin concentrations of 10.0 % and higher included the following: dapsone (n = 40 episodes), benzocaine (n = 10), recreational use of amyl or isobutyl nitrite (n = 3), suicide attempt with sodium nitrite (n = 3 with 1 fatality; all 3 cases within last 3 years), food contaminated with nitrates (n = 2), and sepsis (n = 2). A total of 18 patients received treatment with methylene blue including 5 cases associated with benzocaine and all of the cases associated with amyl nitrite, isobutyl nitrite, sodium nitrite, and contaminated food. Only 3 patients with dapsone-associated methemoglobinemia received methylene blue, reflecting primary management by dose reduction or discontinuation of drug. Overall, our data reinforce previous studies showing dapsone, inhaled nitric oxide, and nitrites as common agents causing methemoglobinemia in a patient population seen at a medical center. Our data also are consistent with recent epidemiology trends showing increase in suicide attempts using sodium nitrite.

The study investigated the possibility of using chitin flakes as an unconventional sorbent for the removal of orthophosphates and nitrates from greenhouse wastewater (GW). The effluent parameters were as follows: 66.2 mg P-PO4/L, 566.0 mg N-NO3/L, 456.0 mg S-SO4/L, 13.7 mg Cl-/L, 721 mg Ca2+/L, 230 mg Mg2+/L, hardness 11.3 °dH, and pH 5.4. The scope of the research included determinations of the influence of pH on GW composition and the efficiency of nutrient sorption, the kinetics of nutrient sorption, the influence of the dose of chitin flakes on the effectiveness of nutrient binding and the maximum sorption capacity of the sorbent. The sorption of P-PO4 on the tested sorbent was most effective at pH 4, and the sorption of N-NO3 at pH 2. The equilibrium time of sorption of both nutrients from GW to chitin depended on the sorbent dose and ranged from 150 to 180 min. The sorbent dose of 40 g/L enabled removing 90% of orthophosphates and 5.7% of nitrates from the wastewater. The maximum sorption capacity of CH towards P-PO4 and N-NO3 contained in the GW was 3.20 mg/g and 3.04 mg/g, respectively. In turn, the sorption of calcium and magnesium ions on chitin flakes was completely ineffective.

HONO acts as a major OH source, playing a vital role in secondary pollutant formation to deteriorate regional air quality. Strong unknown sources of daytime HONO have been widely reported, which significantly limit our understanding of radical cycling and atmospheric oxidation capacity. Here, we identify a potential daytime HONO and OH source originating from photoexcited phenyl organic nitrates formed during the photoreaction of aromatics and NOx. Significant HONO (1.56-4.52 ppb) and OH production is observed during the photoreaction of different kinds of aromatics with NOx (18.1-242.3 ppb). We propose an additional mechanism involving photoexcited phenyl organic nitrates (RONO2) reacting with water vapor to account for the higher levels of measured HONO and OH than the model prediction. The proposed HONO formation mechanism was evidenced directly by photolysis experiments using typical RONO2 under UV irradiation conditions, during which HONO formation was enhanced by relative humidity. The 0-D box model incorporated in this mechanism accurately reproduced the evolution of HONO and aromatic. The proposed mechanism contributes 5.9-36.6% of HONO formation as the NOx concentration increased in the photoreaction of aromatics and NOx. Our study implies that photoexcited phenyl organic nitrates are an important source of atmospheric HONO and OH that contributes significantly to atmospheric oxidation capacity.

Submarine groundwater discharges (SGD) have been associated with important sources of nutrients between the land and oceans that can generate eutrophication conditions. This study aims to analyze the behavior of nitrogen and phosphorus using the mixing curve method, to examine the variation of the trophic state using the Karydis Index, and to evaluate the δ15N in benthic organisms to trace the origin of nitrogen in neap tide (November) and spring tide (January) in the Manatí Cenote, and Nohoch-Teek reef lagoon in the Mexican Caribbean. Nitrogen and phosphate enrichment was in the Manatí Cenote during neap and spring tides. This enrichment was particularly noticeable in the reef lagoon during low tides in the areas influenced by SGD. In the Cenote, differences in the nitrate trophic state were observed, indicating an eu-mesotrophic condition during neap tide and a mesotrophic condition during spring tide. However, no significant differences were observed for ammonium (oligo-mesotrophic), nitrites, or phosphate compounds (oligotrophic). The trophic state reef lagoon exhibited a similar pattern but with different spatial variations. In both systems, phosphorus was a limiting nutrient, while δ15N suggested anthropogenic nitrogen uptake by several benthic organisms.

Edema is an accumulation of fluid in the body's tissues that affects millions of Americans yearly. It can affect multiple body parts, for example, the brain or eyes, but often occurs in the periphery, including the feet and legs. Medications, such as dihydropyridine and thiazolidinediones (TZDs), can be the etiology of edema. Edema can develop in association with problems in the vasculature or lymphatic flow. In recent years, a better understanding of these drug-induced mechanisms has been appreciated. Specifically, dihydropyridines can increase hydrostatic pressure and cause selective pre-capillary vessel vasodilation. TZDs can cause edema through increased vascular permeability and increased hydrostatic pressure. Specifically, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) stimulation increases vascular endothelial permeability, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) secretion, renal sodium, and fluid retention. Other drugs that can cause edema include neuropathic pain agents, dopamine agonists, antipsychotics, nitrates, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDS), steroids, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, and insulin. There are various clinical presentations of edema. Since multiple mechanisms can induce edema, it is important to understand the basic mechanisms and pathophysiology of drug-induced edema. Edema can even become fatal. For example, angioedema can occur from ACE inhibitor therapy. In this regard, it is considered a medical emergency when there is laryngeal involvement. This review aims to thoroughly appreciate the multiple causes of drug-induced edema and the ways it can be treated or prevented.

Particulate organic nitrates (pONs) have drawn growing interests due to their effects on nitrogen cycling, air pollution, and regional climate. While secondary formation is typically considered as the major source of pONs, direct emissions from various sources remain poorly explored. Ship exhausts have been known as an important source of reactive nitrogen species, yet pONs emissions from ship have been rarely characterized. In this study, we conducted atmospheric measurement of pONs during a ship-based cruise measurement campaign in the East China Sea and also emission measurement of pONs from ship exhausts. During the ship-based cruise, total five typical kinds of pONs were determined and the average total concentrations of five pONs were 479 ± 193 and 250 ± 139 ng m-3 when sampling was influenced by ship emissions or not, respectively, indicating the notable impact of ship exhaust plumes on ambient pONs. Further, five typical pONs were successfully identified and quantified from ship exhausts, with the average total concentration of 1123 ± 406 µg m-3. The much higher pONs levels in ship exhausts than in ambient particulate matters demonstrated ship emission as an important source for pONs. Additionally, their emission factors from ship exhausts were determined as at a range of 0.1-12.6 mg kWh-1. The chemical transport model simulations indicate that direct pONs emissions from ship exert a significant contribution to atmospheric pONs, especially in the clean marine atmosphere. These findings provide compelling evidence for direct emission of pONs from ship and its considerable effects. We call for further studies to better characterize the direct pONs emissions from ship and other potential sources, which should be incorporated into global and regional models.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of nonprotein nitrogen (NPN) supplementation on in vitro fermentation and animal performance using a backgrounding diet. In experiment 1, incubations were conducted on three separate days (replicates). Treatments were control (CTL, without NPN), urea (U), urea-biuret (UB), and urea-biuret-nitrate (UBN) mixtures. Except for control, treatments were isonitrogenous using 1% U inclusion as a reference. Ruminal fluid was collected from two Angus-crossbred steers fed a backgrounding diet plus 100 g of a UBN mixture for at least 35 d. The concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFA) and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD), and total gas and methane (CH4) production were determined at 24 h of incubation. In experiment 2, 72 Angus-crossbred yearling steers (303 ±â€…29 kg of body weight [BW]) were stratified by BW and randomly allocated in nine pens (eight animals/pen and three pens/treatment). Steers consumed a backgrounding diet formulated to match the diet used in the in vitro fermentation experiment. Treatments were U, UB, and UBN and were isonitrogenous using 1% U inclusion as a reference. Steers were adapted to the NPN supplementation for 17 d. Then, digestibility evaluation was performed after 13 d of full NPN supplementation for 4 d using 36 steers (12 steers/treatment). After that, steer performance was evaluated for 56 d (24 steers/treatment). In experiment 1, NPN supplementation increased the concentration of NH3-N and VFA (P < 0.01) without affecting the IVOMD (P = 0.48), total gas (P = 0.51), and CH4 production (P = 0.57). Additionally, in vitro fermentation parameters did not differ (P > 0.05) among NPN sources. In experiment 2, NPN supplementation did not change dry matter and nutrient intake (P > 0.05). However, UB and UBN showed lower (P < 0.05) nutrient digestibility than U, except for starch (P = 0.20). Dry matter intake (P = 0.28), average daily gain (P = 0.88), and gain:feed (P = 0.63) did not differ among steers receiving NPN mixtures. In conclusion, tested NPN mixtures have the potential to be included in the backgrounding diets without any apparent negative effects on animal performance and warrant further studies to evaluate other variables to fully assess the response of feeding these novel NPN mixtures.


Nonprotein nitrogen (NPN) supplements can be used as a nitrogen source for ruminants fed low-protein diets. The most common NPN source is urea, included typically at a range between 0.5% and 1% of the diet dry matter in growing beef cattle. Although other NPN sources and mixtures are available, there is scarce information regarding their use in ruminant production. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of NPN sources on in vitro fermentation and animal performance using a backgrounding diet. In experiment 1, three different incubations were performed for 24 h. Treatments were control (without NPN), urea (U), urea­biuret (UB), and urea­biuret­nitrate (UBN) mixtures. In experiment 2, 72 crossbred yearling steers were randomly assigned to one of the following treatments: U, UB, and UBN mixtures. Diets were formulated to contain the same nitrogen concentration in both experiments. In experiment 1, supplementation of NPN increased the in vitro fermentation, but there were no differences among NPN sources. In experiment 2, steers performed similarly among NPN sources. These findings suggest that NPN mixtures have the potential to be included in the backgrounding diets without detrimental effects. Further studies should evaluate other variables (e.g., fermentation dynamic and microbial protein supply) when using these novel mixtures.

The literature is conflicting regarding salivary nitrite (NO2-)/nitrite and nitrate (NO2- and NO3-) levels in children affected by dental caries. For this reason, a systematic review to provide a consensus on the subject was propose, whose objective is to verify whether these molecules could be used as biomarkers in children with caries. A comprehensive search was performed on online database and eleven articles were included in the meta-analysis. The methodological quality of studies was assessed by Newcastle-Ottawa Scale recommended for case-control studies and by AXIS tool for cross-sectional studies. Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation was used for the assessment of the certainty of the evidence for each outcome. The results showed lower NO2- levels in the group of children affected by dental caries (SMD = -2.18 [-3.24, -1.13], p < 0.01). Age, saliva collection and methods of evaluation can impact the results. When evaluating the severity of the condition, an important variation was detected in relation to the different evaluation methods NO2-/NO2- and NO3-. In conclusion, based on the evidence presented, the results suggest that NO2- levels in saliva are a possible biomarker of dental caries. Results should be evaluated with caution due to the very low evidence from primary studies. Longitudinal studies are necessary to strengthen this hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: Dyslipidemia is a known risk factor for cardiac dysfunction, and lipid-lowering therapy with statins reduces symptoms and reduces hospitalization related to left ventricular heart failure. Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. In this study, we aimed to determine the real-world AMI treatment drug combination used in Taiwan by using the NHI database to understand the treatment outcomes of current clinical medications prescribed for hyperlipidemia patients with AMI. METHODS: Using the NHI Research Database (NHIRD), we conducted a retrospective cohort study that compared different treatments for AMI in hyperlipidemia patients in the period from 2016 to 2018. We compared the survival outcomes between those treated with and without organic nitrates in this cohort. RESULTS: We determined that most hyperlipidemia patients were aged 61-70 y (29.95-31.46% from 2016 to 2018), and the annual AMI risk in these patients was <1% (0.42-0.68% from 2016 to 2018). The majority of hyperlipidemia patients with AMI were women, and 25.64% were aged 61-70 y. Receiving organic nitrates was associated with lower all-cause mortality rates (HR, 95% CI, p-value = 0.714, 0.674-0.756, p < 0.0001). After multivariate analysis, the overall survival in four groups (beta-blockers, beta-blocker + diuretics, diuretics, and others) receiving an organic nitrate treatment was significantly higher than in the groups that were not treated with organic nitrates (beta-blockers HR = 0.536, beta-blocker + diuretics HR = 0.620, diuretics HR = 0.715, and others HR = 0.690). CONCLUSIONS: The survival benefit was significantly greater in patients treated with organic nitrates than in those treated without organic nitrates, especially when combined with diuretics. A combination of organic nitrates could be a better treatment option for hyperlipidemia patients with AMI.

Insect larval frass has been proposed as a fertilizer and amendment, but methods for testing its effects on plants are poorly developed and need standardization. We obtained different types of black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) frass via the factorial combination of (a) two insect diets, as follows: G (Gainesville = 50% wheat bran, 30% alfalfa meal, 20% maize meal) and W (43% sheep whey + 57% seeds); (b) two frass thermal treatments: NT = untreated and T = treated at 70 °C for 1 h. We tested the effects on the germination of cress (Lepidium sativum L.) and wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) by applying 1:2 w:w water extracts at 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% concentration. Standardizing frass water content before extraction affected chemical composition. Frass extracts showed high electrical conductivity (8.88 to 13.78 mS cm-1). The W diet was suppressive towards Escherichia coli and showed a lower content of nitrates (e.g., WNT 40% lower than GNT) and a concentration-dependent phytotoxic effect on germinating plants. At 25% concentration, germination indices of G were 4.5 to 40-fold those at 100%. Root and shoot length and root hair area were affected by diet and concentration of frass extracts (e.g., root and shoot length in cress at 25% were, respectively, 4.53 and 2 times higher than at 100%), whereas the effects of the thermal treatment were few or inconclusive. On barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) grown in micropots on a silty loam soil, root mass was reduced by 37% at high extract concentration. A quick procedure for root hair surface area was developed based on the geographic information system (GIS) and may provide a fast method for incorporating root hair phenotyping in frass evaluation. The results indicate that below-ground structures need to be addressed in research on frass effects. For this, phyotoxicity tests should encompass different extract dilutions, and frass water content should be standardized before extraction in the direction of canonical procedures to allow comparisons.

BACKGROUND: Dietary nitrate (NO3-) has been shown to be useful as an ergogenic aid with potential applications in health and disease (e.g., blood pressure control). However, there is no consensus about the effects of dietary NO3- or beetroot (BR) juice supplementation on cognitive function. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a single dose of a chewable BR-based supplement on cognitive performance. METHODS: A double-blind randomized placebo-controlled two-period crossover clinical trial was carried out based on the extension of the CONSORT guidelines for randomized crossover trials. A total of 44 participants (24 F; 20 M; 32.7 [12.5] years; 66.3 [9.0] kg; 170 [9.2] cm; 22.8 [1.4] kg/m2) were randomly allocated to receive first either four BR-based chewable tablets (BR-CT) containing 3 g of a Beta vulgaris extract (RedNite®) or four tablets of a placebo (maltodextrin). A 4-day washout period was used before crossover. Ninety minutes after ingestion of the treatments, a neuropsychological testing battery was administered in each period. The trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov NCT05509075. RESULTS: Significant improvements with moderate effect size were found on memory consolidation at the short and long term only after BR-CT supplementation via the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test immediate (+ 20.69%) and delayed (+ 12.34%) recalls. Likewise, enhancement on both frontal lobe functions (+ 2.57%) and cognitive flexibility (+ 11.16%) were detected after BR-CT. There was no significant change (p < 0.05) on verbal memory of short-term digits, working memory and information processing speed. Mixed results were found on mood and anxiety through the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-Y1 and STAI-Y2); however, sequence and period effects were seen on STAI-Y2. CONCLUSIONS: The acute administration of a chewable BR-based supplement improves certain aspects of cognitive function in healthy females and males, particularly memory capacity and frontal skills.

Land-based aquaculture provides dietary protein to the world's population in a sustainable way, but issues related to release of nitrogen rich wastewater limits its expansion. Sedimentation of naturally occurring microalgae that assimilate excess nitrogen, is slow and land intensive. Electro-flocculation, used in wastewater treatment processes, is a potential alternative for aquaculture. Trials of different electro-flocculation configurations applied to three prawn farm pondwater samples containing varying microalgal assemblages are reported. In 64 % of trials, electro-flocculation reduced total nitrogen (TN) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) loads within regulatory limits.TN was reduced up to 83.2 % (10.93 to 1.83 mg.L-1) within 20 mins in stationary water, and DIN to 90.6 % (3.19 to 0.30 mg.L-1) in 102 mins trials in flowing water. Bellerochea andGloeocapsa spp. were dominant in wastewater. The role of microalgal community composition on flocculation is discussed, including evidence Bellerocheapromotes flocculation. This study confirmed electro-flocculation quickly reduces TN and DIN.

The accumulation of nitrate (NO3-) in surface waters resulting from mining activities and rapid urbanization has raised widespread concerns. Therefore, it is crucial to develop a nitrate transformation information system to elucidate the nitrogen cycle and ensure sustainable water quality management. In this study, we focused on the main river and subsidence area of the Huaibei mining region to monitor the temporal and spatial variations in the NO3- content. Multiple isotopes (δD, δ18O-H2O, δ15N-NO3-, δ18O-NO3-, and δ15N-NH4+) along with water chemistry indicators were employed to identify the key mechanisms responsible for nitrate accumulation (e.g., nitrification and denitrification). The NO3- concentrations in surface water ranged from 0.28 to 7.50 mg/L, with NO3- being the predominant form of nitrogen pollution. Moreover, the average NO3- levels were higher during the dry season than during the wet season. Nitrification was identified as the primary process driving NO3- accumulation in rivers and subsidence areas, which was further supported by the linear relationship between δ15N-NO3- and δ15N-NH4+. The redox conditions and the relationship between δ15N-NO3- and δ18O-NO3-, and lower isotope enrichment factor of denitrification indicated that denitrification was weakened. Phytoplankton preferentially utilized available NH4+ sources while inhibiting NO3- assimilation because of their abundance. These findings provide direct evidence regarding the mechanism underlying nitrate accumulation in mining areas, while aiding in formulating improved measures for effectively managing water environments to prevent further deterioration.

A newly constructed thermal dissociation cavity ring-down spectrometer (TD-CRDS) for the simultaneous measurement of ambient total peroxy nitrates (ΣPNs, RO2NO2), total alkyl nitrates (ΣANs, RONO2), and NO2 was presented in this work. ΣPNs and ΣANs were detected as NO2 with the CRDS instrument after thermal dissociation. PNs and ANs completely dissociated at 180 °C and 360 °C, with conversion efficiencies of 96 % and 99 %, respectively. The effects of NO2 and NO on measurement in different temperatures and two types of thermal dissociation inlet (TDI) were further explored. The influence of ambient NO2 and NO on PNs and ANs in the improved TDI (TDI-2) was significantly improved. To further enhance the measurement accuracy, the consistency of the observed NO2 in the three channels was tested, which achieved good agreement. The detection limits of the TD-CRDS instrument for NO2, ΣPNs, and ΣANs were determined as 6.5, 6.8, and 8.6 pptv (10 s, 1σ), respectively. Observations of PNs and ANs were conducted in a suburban site in Hefei, China, from September 2-30, 2021, using the TD-CRDS instrument, and the consecutive time series of PNs and ANs were derived, verifying the capability of the TD-CRDS instrument for continuous field observations of ΣPNs and ΣANs.
